Minor in Kisii goes on hunger strike over shortchanged school selection list .

Parents say for a week she has not eaten for missing out on Kenya High

A family in Kitutu Chache South in Kisii is struggling to comfort their daughter and bring her to the dining table after a teacher shortchanged the secondary school selection list thus denying her a chance at Kenya High, her favorite pick.

Nyaboke Kong’a, 14,had secured 409 marks of possible 500 marks from Rubicraft Adventist Boarding in Kendubay in Homabay County and was eagerly looking forward to join the dream school .

The score out her among the best overall in the female candidates category in the region

During the selection, she picked Kenya High School from her stream and when she received the impressive score, she was elated that she would be enlisted to the school .

Her parents – Rebbecca Omwoyo and Samuel Kong’a – said a teacher in the school has since admitted to changing the list in favour of another candidate in the second stream.

“It is a decision that has left my daughter in a foul mood since the results came out , she barely eats and sometimes wakes up at night and bolts out to nowhere,” said the mother.

Today, the candidate scarcely joins them on the dining table for meal.

She often locks herself away to pen long essays castigating the rogue teacher for ruining her choice .

Two of her siblings who made to Alliance are doing medicine.

The young Konga had vowed to work hard to join Kenya High to follow in their footsteps too.

The parents said her second school pick , Pagani Girls, has failed to elicited any postive feelings in her adding that she insists that all she wants is to join Kenya High.

“We have tried all we could to persuade her that Pangani is also a good school but in vain, she is still beside with grief for losing out on Kenya High,”stated Rebbecca.

They now appeal to Education CS Ezekiel Machogu to intervene so that their daughter can end her hunger strike.

” We fear losing her, it is close to a week just surviving on sips of water, please someone help, “the distraught mother, herself struggling with heart condition told the Star at their Nyamataro residence in Kisii town.

Teachers at Rubicraft, in a response, to the Star said already they have started a probe regarding the circumstances in which the incident occurred.

“Yes, we are aware of the matter but we have instituted a disciplinary case against the said matter,” the senior teacher told the Star by phone.

He however said they are exploring other mechanisms to ensure that she gets the slot at her favorite school.

“We are exploring all avenues including getting in touch with the management of Kenya High, if it works out we shall communicate to the family,” said the teacher.
