Five in trouble for touching UDA offices in Nyanza

Police on Sunday arrested five people suspected to have torched the UDA offices in Siaya during Azimio protests.

According to the police, the suspects are currently in custody for being part of a gang that vandalized and set property on fire during last Thursday’s demonstrations in Siaya County.

Michael Ochieng, Phelix Omondi, Elly Wambani, Julius Odiaga and
Godwin Omollo Ochieng, were arrested on Sunday .

The police said the arrests were made following intelligence leads.

According to the law enforcement agency, exhibits , including iron sheets and window grills were recovered from the suspects .

Police say a gang of around 1000 people had engaged police officers in running battles, before barricading the road leading to the Siaya UDA office and set it on fire after vandalizing it.

Five police officers were injured.

“Armed with crude weapons, projectiles and petrol bombs, the thugs turned to the police officers who were responding to the violence and seriously injured five of them,” a police report indicates.

Two police vehicles were also damaged during the incident.

“The five are currently in custody as appropriate charges are being prepared, before arraigning the suspects in court,” the police said .

The opposition chief as a counter offer agreed to call of the demonstrations with a a condition that their demands are met or else the protests shall resume within a week.

He also demanded termination of all ongoing prosecution of those who were arrested during the protests.
