Over  50 Seventh Day Adventist churches in Kisii’s Gosere area in South Mugirango have ditched the mainstream church leadership leadership and oughted to join the  controversial Nairobi Cosmopolitan Conference, NCC.

According to elders  who spoke to our team at Ikoba in Tabaka said the move to ditch the church’s formally recognized South Kenya Conference leadership structure was sparked by its failure to address challenges affecting them.

They described the journey with the SKC as ‘windy and torturous’ forcing them to to opt out.

Alloys Mokono, the elders chair, said the Gosere churches had patiently borne ill treatment from the South Kenya Conference for more than four years before arriving at the decision them to abandon it for the NCC.

“For us we  have moved  on amid the trails by today we have made a united decision that is time to move on to where we can find rest which is the Nairobi Cosmopolitan Conference,” he said .

The General Conference (GC) of Seventh-day Adventists with its head offices in Maryland in the USA has since sued the Nairobi Cosmopolitan Conference (NCC) over the use of the Adventist trademark and logo.

The global church leadership is further seeking the entity to be stopped from operating as a religious entity.

The legal argument is that the NCC should not be able to operate as a religious organization because it is registered as a private company.

The GC claims only Adventist denomination has exclusive rights to the name Seventh-day Adventist.

One major source of the tension is a dispute over a 2015 election in which heads of the Central Kenya Conference (part of the EKUC) of the denomination were chosen.

Some felt that the election process was manipulated and that appointments had been biased by ethnic divisions

On Saturday ,however, the elders from Gosere said the decision to join NCC has not made the members non-Seventh Day Adventists.

“We  are telling  the world that we are still loyal members of the Seventh Day Adventist Church and we dispel the false narratives being spread that we have ditched the faith,” said Mokono.

The elders told leaders at the South Kenya conference to stop the aggression against them especially using the authorities to close some rebellious churches in the region.

The move by churches in Kisii was the first after more others from Transmara also jumped ship.
